Teaching Notes and Photocopiable page from The Phonics Handbook

The Phonics Handbook is divided into two parts.

Part one serves to support the teacher / parent by providing an introduction which explains the five key skills for reading writing and language and how to teach them. This section is subdivided into the following five parts:

1. Learning the Letter Sounds
2. Learning Letter Formation
3. Blending - for reading
4. Identifying the Sounds in Words - for writing
5. Tricky Words - irregular words

Part two provides the materials used to implement the teaching:

  • Photocopiable information on the scheme for parents wanting to support their child's learning
  • Lesson plans and worksheets for each of the 42 sounds introduced in the scheme
  • Resources to develop blending skills such as String Joining and Word Box sheets- which also serve as homework activities
  • Missing Sound Sheets and Homework Writing Sheets to help children learn how to identify the sounds in words
  • Tricky Word Sheets - 60 of the most common irregularly spelt words in the English language, as well as tips on how children can learn them
  • Resources for developing children's awareness and use of the alternative vowel spellings

The handbook also contains a handy timetable of activities for the first term of teaching Jolly Phonics.
