Mrs. Opheera McDoom has recently returned to the UK, having founded the Legacy School in Sudan in 2012, which has become one of the most respected schools in the country, known for excellence in reading. Since the beginning, Jolly Phonics and Grammar has been used as the primary literacy programme in the school.
She designed and taught training courses for Sudanese and U.N. journalists and press officers, advised and trained government officials in Libya, Sudan and South Sudan and undertaken training consultancies for the United Nations and World Bank. As a former journalist and head of Reuters office in Khartoum, Mrs. McDoom won awards including the United Nations Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Award, Reuters journalist of the year, and has been the Reuters nominee for the prestigious OPC award, the IWMF’s Courage in Journalism award and the Prix Bayeux.
Mrs. McDoom is proud to be a Jolly Phonics Trainer, as Jolly Phonics has been the system used since starting Legacy School. She runs teacher training as well as Jolly Phonics courses and all her amazing teaching staff have had full Jolly Phonics training by her. She is now based in London, but continues to travel to Sudan for work.
